NYC DANCE CENTER
New York, New York
Fall 2006 - 4th Year
Professor Wood

Located on the smallest city block in New York City, this project asked us to design a large Dance Center building that also includes small and large loft apartments. The concept behind this design is the idea of shifting. The primary program of this building is for dance-related activities and spaces, so the building shifts to symbolize the shifting of the body that occurs with dancing. Because the building shifts, it results in many unique outdoor and indoor open spaces that could be used for many purposes, including an outdoor dance studio, a place of relaxation, and an outdoor classroom, among other things. The narrow site creates a vertically-emphasized building that makes a bold presence along the Hudson River and West Side Highway.
